Starting Points for Individual Therapy
Beginning therapy can feel uncertain, and it is completely normal not to have everything clearly defined at the start. Individual therapy provides a structured and supportive space to explore what is happening in your life at your own pace.
Sessions can take place in person or through online therapy, depending on what feels most appropriate and accessible for you.
Reflective Questions
- Have you had counselling before? If so was it a positive experience?
- How would you describe your current situation?
- What problems are you experiencing?
- What are your main concerns?
- How is your family life?
- Do you have a support network? i.e. friends, family, professional organisation?
- What do you think originally caused these problems?
- What is making it difficult to deal with these problems yourself?
- Have you being diagnosed with a mental health problem?
- Are you currently taking any medication? What are these?
- What changes are you hoping for?
- What would you like to gain from counselling?

How Therapy Works
Therapy is not a fixed or standardised process. It is shaped around your individual experiences, pace, and capacity.
Together we will agree whether a short-term structured approach or longer-term open-ended therapy is most appropriate. Regular reviews are used to ensure the work remains helpful and aligned with your goals.
The therapeutic relationship itself is an important part of the process, offering a consistent, confidential space to explore thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and patterns that may be difficult to address alone.
Accessing Therapy
Individual therapy can be accessed either face-to-face or via online therapy, depending on your preference, location, and circumstances.
Online sessions provide flexibility and accessibility, while in-person work may feel more suitable for others. Both formats offer the same level of professional support and therapeutic depth.
Next Steps
If you are considering starting therapy, the first session provides an opportunity to talk through what has brought you here and what you would like to change or understand more deeply.
